Pair of Candelabra

These candelabra were designed and executed by the Parian silversmith Robert-Joseph Auguste for a massive order of more than 150 silver table wares delivered between 1764 and 1785 to the Elector of Hanover at Herrenhausen Palace (in modern-day Germany). At that time, the Electorate was ruled by George III, King of England. He took a keen interest in the commission, approving the Neoclassical style and shape of its numerous pieces, including tureens, serving dishes, condiment vessels, and individual plates for seventy-two guests. The overall elegance and restraint of the forms are expressed here by the tapering stems with female heads, scrolling candle branches, winged putti, and delicate beading. In 1924, the service was dispersed and survives today divided, principally between museums in England and France.
