German collectors prized the delicate "twisted-thread" decoration of this covered cup and ordered silver-gilt mounts to accentuate and protect its edges. One of only two known mounted examples of this shape, this rare covered cup seems to have been made in Murano and exported to Germany to be mounted there later. The German mountmaker, who specialized in elaborate mounts for writing boxes, jewelry cases, and clocks but worked on few glass vessels, placed his punch mark on the cover's metal lip. The mark indicating that the cup was produced in the city of Augsburg between 1615 and 1625 is set beside the maker's mark.
