Saint Fiacre (died 670) was an Irish monk who traveled to France and established a hermitage and hospice near the town of Meaux east of Paris. He did this under the patronage of the local bishop, Saint Faro. Regarded as the patron saint of gardeners, Fiacre is represented holding a book and a spade. This panel forms a pair with another panel depicting a saint blessing a donor, also owned by the Museum. The feet of the kneeling donor in the adjacent panel are depicted in the lower right corner of this scene.
