A Prophet or Elder

A man in archaic dress stands and gestures to a scroll held in his right hand. Since he does not have a halo and wears unusual clothes, this may represent a prophet carrying a message. The figure stands on a small plinth and is flanked by moldings or pilasters indicating an architectural setting. The composition is suggestive of sculpture on a heavily articulated façade or carved surface. The museum owns two other fragments from what must have been a larger ensemble (Virgin and Child with Saint John and Saint John the Evangelist).
