Plate

The mottled reddish-brown color on this plate imitates the look of tortoiseshell. The image of the heron was copied from one of the colored illustrations by François-Nicolas Martinet that accompanied the editions of the Natural History of Birds by the comte de Buffon, published between 1770 and 1786.
