Saint John the Evangelist

Saint John the Evangelist is shown writing in a book while standing beside an eagle, his attribute. The figure stands on a small plinth and is flanked by moldings or pilasters indicating an architectural setting. The composition is suggestive of sculpture on a heavily articulated façade or carved surface. The museum owns two other fragments from what must have been a larger ensemble (Virgin and Child with Saint John and A Prophet or Elder).
