Commode

This chest of drawers is one of a pair that was made for the Versailles bedroom of Madame Louise (1737–1787), a daughter of King of France Louis XV (reigned 1715–1774). The Journal of the royal household's furnishings records the commode’s delivery on August 28th, 1769. It also includes the name of its maker, its dimensions, a detailed description, and its inventory number, 2556.2, which is inscribed on the back. The commode’s maker, Gilles Joubert, had a long career. He was eighty years old when he delivered this piece. Joubert's furniture frequently features the decorative motif seen here, a diamond pattern in the wood with gilt-bronze rosettes at crossing points. The thick gilding, large size, detailed bronze elements, and heavy marble top all contribute to an overall impression of luxury suitable for a royal owner.
