Stand Attachment in the form of a Statuette of a Youth Carrying a Discus

A sturdily built nude athlete with short cropped hair holds out a discus in his left hand. He stands atop a low base, with his left leg advanced and right arm extended slightly forward. The suspension ring emerging from the head indicates its utilitarian function. Statuettes of athletes, dancers, and mythological figures frequently surmount candelabra that furnished dining rooms. They were also ornamental finials on portable stands with branched arms, which held banquet equipment such as cups, ladles, and strainers.
